Which file format is right for me?

Updated:June 26, 2024

4k ProRes

For the vast majority of work, 4k ProRes is more than sufficient. All of our ProRes footage is created with a high bit rate and low compression. And in many cases, we provide an alpha channel when appropriate for quick drag-and-drop usage.

4k EXR

Professional studios will often have a workflow that utilizes image sequences such as our EXR sequences. These sequences are very similar to our 4k ProRes files but offer slightly higher color quality and lower compression. Also, similar to the ProRes files, EXR files have an alpha channel when appropriate.

RAW

Our RAW footage (generally RED Cinema R3Ds) ranges in resolution from 2k to 8k. They offer the highest quality possible in regard to resolution and color depth. The downside to working with RAW footage is that it is generally slower to playback and edit (requires more CPU/GPU power) and that it does not include an alpha (transparency) channel.
